From Prometheus to Sisyphus. When Apple announced their new file system, APFS, in June, I hustled to be in the front row of the WWDC presentation, questions with the presenters, and then the open Q&A session. I took a week to write up my notes which turned into as 12 page behemoth of a blog post — longer than my college thesis. According to Greek mythology, Sisyphus was the founder and King of Corinth, a city in south-central Greece. Sisyphus was famed for his cleverness, leading Homer to describe him in the Iliad as “the most cunning of men.”. Unfortunately for Sisyphus, he was also a selfish and evil person who deserved everything he got. Sisyphus, in Greek mythology, the cunning king of Corinth who was punished in Hades by having to repeatedly roll a huge stone up a hill only to have it roll back down again as soon as he had brought it to the summit. Americans have always been a little egotistical about our language. I think some of it can be attributed to laziness. Learning a new language is hard work. You need to learn a new vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation.

If you are interested in jumping in and giving it a try, check out the BBC’s Languages site where you will find free audio and video courses. They offer courses in Spanish, French, German, Italian and and a host of others. The site has a Quick Fix section where you can learn essential phrases in 36 languages. Take the 12-week beginners’ courses and stop by each day to check the phrase of the day daily. Check it out.
